Dutch Present Tense

Let’s go over the rules for the present tense. It starts with knowing the personal pronouns.

Singular Personal Pronouns:Plural Personal Pronouns:
First person → ikFirst person → we, wij
Second person → jij, je, uSecond person → jullie
Third person → hij, ze/zij, hetThird person → ze, zij

When to add a -t to the verb stem?

ik Never gets a -t (unless the -t is part of the verb stem.)
jij, je, u Mostly gets a -t, but there is an exception for je en jij.*
hij, ze/zij, het Always gets a -t

Een voorbeeld met werken ( = to work)

*Exception rule for second person:
If the verb is put in front of je or jij, you don’t need to add a -t.
