When do we separate the preposition from the verb?

1. When we use the imperative – giving instructions.

oplossen	to solve	Hij lost het probleem op.	He solves the problem.

When using a subclause where the verb comes at the end, we don’t separate the verb, but you do have to conjugate the separable verb.

aanhouden	to keep on	Ik zei dat ik mijn jas liever aanhield.	I said I preferred to keep my coat on.
uitgeven	to spend	Ik hoop dat Tess niet te veel geld uitgeeft.	I hope Tess doesn’t spend too much money.
oplossen	to solve	We weten zeker dat hij het probleem oplost.	We are sure he will solve the problem.

1. When we use a modal verb and a separable verb. The separable verb will be used in plural form.

uitdoen	to take off	Hij wil zijn schoenen uitdoen.	He wants to take off his shoes.
invullen	to fill in	Tess zal het formulier straks invullen.	Tess will fill out the form later.

2. When we use the present perfect, we put the prefix ge- between the preposition and the verb.
