Eindelijk heb je na veel oefenen de moed verzameld om Nederlands te praten. Daar sta je dan in de winkel of een koffiezaakje. Je perst je beste Nederlands eruit en dan spreekt de medewerker terug in het Engels!
Er schieten allerlei vragen door je hoofd. Heb ik iets verkeerds gezegd? Was mijn uitspraak niet goed? Hebben ze me niet begrepen? Nou, dan maar weer terug naar het Engels. En voor je het weet is je zelfvertrouwen weer weg en durf je geen Nederlands meer te spreken.
Helaas gebeurt dit (te) vaak. De meeste Nederlanders bedoelen het goed. Ze willen het gesprek gemakkelijker voor je maken door Engels te spreken, maar denken er niet over na dat je graag Nederlands wil leren. Maar het komt natuurlijk ook voor dat ze gewoon geen geduld hebben.
Hoe zorg ik ervoor dat mensen Nederlands met me gaan praten?
Als je Nederlands wilt leren, zul je vaak zelf initiatief moeten tonen. Vertel mensen dat je Nederlands aan het leren bent.
Als ze dan toch in het Engels reageren, probeer dan in het Nederlands terug te praten. Ik begrijp heel goed dat dit niet gemakkelijk is, maar het is wel heel belangrijk om te proberen.
Laat je ook niet leiden door gezichtsuitdrukkingen van mensen. Vaak denken we daardoor te weten wat de ander denkt, maar dit klopt niet altijd. Het gevaar is dat je hiermee je eigen onzekerheid projecteert op de ander. Daardoor kan je onzekerder worden en denken dat je Nederlands niet goed genoeg is.
Wees hier voorzichtig mee, want dit is misschien wel de grootste valkuil voor velen.

Learning Dutch: Practical advice to speak Dutch
Finally, after much practice, you’ve gathered the courage to speak Dutch. There you are in the store or a coffee shop. You squeeze out your best Dutch and then the employee speaks back in English!
All sorts of questions pop into your head. Did I say something wrong? Was my pronunciation wrong? Did they not understand me? Well, back to English then. And before you know it, your self-confidence is gone again and you no longer dare to speak Dutch.
Unfortunately, this happens (too) often. Most Dutch people mean well. They want to make the conversation easier for you by speaking English, but don’t think about the fact that you would like to learn Dutch. Of course, it also happens that they simply have no patience.
How do I get people to talk Dutch to me?
If you want to learn Dutch, you’ll have to show the initiative yourself. Tell people that you are learning Dutch.
If they do respond in English, try to talk back in Dutch. I fully understand that this is not easy, but it’s very important to try.
Also, don’t let people’s facial expressions guide you. Often this makes us think we know what the other person is thinking, but this is not always true. The danger with this is that you’re projecting your own insecurity onto the other person. As a result, you may become more insecure and think that your Dutch is not good enough.
Be careful with this, because this is perhaps the biggest pitfall for many.
